There is an excellent showcase of primitive but colorful and bright folk art on Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore. The place is known as “The Jesus House” and is right on the main 7 highway in Ship Harbour.
It is the home of the famous folk artist Barry Colpitts and his wife Bettianne. Barry was rewarded with the King Charles III Coronation Medal on March 16, 2025. The ceremony took place at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax.
Barry Colpitts’ creations are on display at the Canadian Museum of History, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and many personal collections around the world.
You can purchase the artist’s works at the famous Lunenburg Folk Art Festival, but be aware that his pieces are in high demand and sell quickly.
The style reminds one of another favorite Canadian artist, Maude Lewis, whose paintings are also on display at the Art Gallery in Halifax. This folk art celebrates simple things in life and spreads joy and smiles.
